The salvage command permits you to take a finished product and render it back down into some of its core components. It's a negative sum operation - the natural result of salvaging is that you end up with less than you started. There is no guarantee in cases where an item has a composite material make up that you will get the specific material you are looking for from the salvage.
The skill and difficulty of the salvage check is based on the material you are attemping to salvage.
